The Dr. Mervin D. Lynch Outstanding Dissertation Award

In honor of the founder and past executive director of the Association for the Advancement of Educational Research (AAER), currently the Association for the Advancement of Educational Research International (AAERI), this annual award is given to a doctoral candidate who has completed their studies in the past two years and has demonstrated commitment to innovated intellectual development. Further, the candidate should have produced a dissertation that exhibits high standards, shows evidence of originality, suitability for publication and the importance of research.

The AAERI seeks to recognize an individual who has shown exemplary work in scholarship that adds to the literature in their field of study. The winner is honored at the AAERI annual conference, will receive a certificate of recognition, an AAERI membership waiver for the year of the award, and a one-time cash award. The award recipient must be present to accept the award. Travel, transportation, and accommodations are the responsibility of the award recipient. Nominations for the 2020 award will be accepted through September 30, 2020.

Eligibility Criteria:

Only current doctoral candidates or those who have successfully defended their dissertation during 2018, 2019, or 2020 academic years.

Candidate’s English language dissertation must be an independent piece of research that is the sole work of the author.

Nominations must include the nominee’s current curriculum vitae.

Dissertations from any discipline are eligible as long as the nomination is by a faculty member who is also a member of AAERI. The faculty member need not be a member of the candidate’s dissertation committee.

Nominations must include a full electronic version of the dissertation with a letter of nomination detailing its significance to the candidate’s field of study. Nominations must include the nominee’s current mailing address, email address, phone number, and the institution where the degree was awarded.

All nominations must be sent via email to with the subject heading, “Outstanding Dissertation Award.”

Each submission will be judged by a panel of faculty experts, based on its exemplary work in originality, research, and scholarship that make a significant contribution to the candidate’s field of study and to the advancement of theory and practice.
